No real money

Free stock market games, compared

Six free ways to play the stock market with no real money. They come in two kinds: trading simulators, where you buy and sell with virtual cash, and fantasy-style games, where you draft a team.

One of the six, PlayFSL, is ours — so this page sticks to plain facts you can check and doesn't rank anyone.

Each game in plain words

Trading simulator

Investopedia Stock Simulator

A free stock trading simulator from Investopedia. You get virtual cash to buy and sell real U.S.-listed stocks and funds, and you can join or create games with rankings — public, or private behind a password, on dates the creator sets. It needs a free Investopedia account and runs in a web browser; we found no official simulator app in the app stores.

Described from public reviews and guides — check investopedia.com for current details.

Fits you if you want to practice buying and selling stocks and funds with virtual cash and see where you rank in a game.

Trading simulator

Wall Street Survivor

A free stock market simulator from Stock-Trak that runs in your browser: trade stocks, ETFs, options and crypto with virtual cash, with short investing lessons alongside. Public contests run about a month at a time, and the portfolio that grows the most wins — with prizes for eligible adults 18 and over in the U.S. and Canada (excluding Quebec). Anyone can also create a free invite-only contest with custom rules and share a link to it with friends.

Fits you if you want short lessons alongside your trading, or a month-long public contest with prizes.

Trading simulator

MarketWatch's Virtual Stock Exchange

A free trading game from MarketWatch: create or join a game, trade stocks with virtual cash, and compete on that game's leaderboard. The host sets the budget, dates and rules; games can be public or password-private, and each one has a comment feed. It's meant for ages 16 and up, needs a free MarketWatch login, and plays in a web browser — its phone apps are no longer in the app stores.

Fits you if you want to host a trading game with your own budget, dates and rules.

Trading simulator

How the Market Works

A free, ad-supported stock market simulator from Stock-Trak, built for schools — teachers run contests for their classes. Players trade stocks, ETFs and mutual funds with virtual cash, and need a free account. For adults, self-learners and friend contests, its site points to its sister site, Wall Street Survivor.

Fits you if you're a teacher who wants to run a stock market contest for a class.

Fantasy-style game

Fantasy Stock League app

A free fantasy-style stock game from Fantasy Stock League LLC — not affiliated with PlayFSL — with iPhone, iPad and Android apps plus a website. In its ranked drafts, 12 players snake-draft 10 stocks each; each portfolio is weighted by draft slot, locked for a 90-day season, and ranked by value within a 12-player division, with finishes earning World Ranking points. Private drafts run from 7 days to a year; there is no real money and no in-app purchases, and it is for ages 13+.

Fits you if you want a phone app, and a drafted portfolio that stays locked for a 90-day season.

Fantasy-style game · Our game

PlayFSL

Our game: free, in any modern browser, with no real money — you never buy, sell or hold a share, and there are no entry fees, bets or prizes, just bragging rights. You snake-draft 7 real companies from about 100 large U.S. companies, then each week start 5 and rank them by conviction — the top slot counts 5×, down to 1× — and score on how they move that week, live on market weekdays. Private leagues seat up to 8 friends for 4 or 8 weeks, with league chat and head-to-head matchups; public leagues always run 4 weeks, are free to join, and draft Sundays at 3 PM ET.

Fits you if you want to draft a team with friends and make a lineup call every week of a short season.

How we checked

We read each game's own website, rules and app-store listings. Two exceptions: the Investopedia Stock Simulator is described from public reviews and guides, and MarketWatch's game pages were read from Internet Archive copies saved on the day we checked.

Checked September 26, 2026 — products change; see each site for current details.
